From a KFC-Reject to Billion in Net Worth

From KFC-Reject to World’s 70th Richest Man

From a KFC-reject to $21 Billion in net worth – Jack Ma’s life

Ma started his career as an English teacher and failed in numerous ventures, including being rejected for a job in KFC, before he founded Alibaba in 1999. Today, he is China’s richest man with a net worth of over $21 billion.Whilst the world and the Chinese diaspora dance in festivities after the listing of and coming very close to legendary Wal-Mart’s market cap on day one, there is lot of hard way behind this seemingly overnight success, it did take nerves of steel for Jack Ma. Some trivia for you to learn from his life.

Jack Ma was refused a job at KFC

Jack Ma had a meagerly paying job and hoping to better his lot in the early 1990s he applied, and was turned down for many jobs, including with KFC in his hometown. It is said that at KFC he applied for the job of secretary to the General Manager and was turned down.

There is no shortcut to success

“Starting at age 12, Ma says he awoke at 5 a.m. to walk or bicycle to Hangzhou’s main hotel so he could practice his English with foreign tourists, who started trickling into the country after Mao’s death in 1976. He did this for nine years and acted as a free tour guide to many, befriended several and later visited one family in Australia.” Says an article in USA today. After graduating, he taught English at a university for five years. His pay was a meager 100 to 120 yuan (S$20 to S$25) a month.

23 out of 24 friends of Jack Ma, rejected his idea

According to Jack Ma -“ Before I founded Alibaba, I invited 24 friends to my house to discuss the business opportunity. After discussing for a full two hours, they were still confused — I have to say that I may not have put myself across in a clear manner then. The verdict: 23 out of the 24 people in the room told me to drop the idea, for a multitude of reasons, such as: ‘you do not know anything about the internet, and more prominently, you do not have the start-up capital for this’ etc etc.”

Technology is not the only differentiation

Despite running the largest e-commerce platform in the world, Ma once claimed that he has little knowledge about technology, limiting his computer use to Internet and emails.

Don’t die anonymous

Jack Ma in an interview to Vulcan post says, “ When I first started Alibaba, I was immediately met with strong opposition from family and friends. Looking back, I realized that the biggest driving force for me then was not my confidence in the Internet and the potential it held, but more of this: No matter what one does, regardless of failure or success, the experience is a form of success in itself. You have got to keep trying, and if it doesn’t work, you always can revert back to what you were doing before. ”

Alibaba is a dinosaur in making; its sales for 2014 are estimated at $420bn dwarfing Amazon and eBay, which had a combined turnover of $90bn in 2013.

Jack Ma’s advice to entrepreneurs

“Entrepreneurs must know the answers to the two questions.

  • First question is, what do you want to do? It’s not what your parents want you to do, or what your colleagues tell you to do. It’s not what others are doing but what you want to do indeed.
  • Second question is, what do you need to do? You must understand that this is not about what you can do. Instead, it’s what you should do.”

Alien thigh bone on Mars? Odd object on NASA Curiosity rover photo

Sending a robotic rover to explore the surface of an alien planet comes with the expectation of finding new and odd objects on the planet. For those monitoring the findings of the Mars Curiosity Rover, which has been investigating the climate and geology of Mars since it landed on the Red Planet’s Gale Crater in August 2012, these odd objects have come in what looked like dinosaur spines, mysterious lights, an iguana and dinosaurs in images taken by the rover.

Last week, the Curiosity rover has yet again captured another image that fuels speculations of Mars being inhabited by complex life forms. The image captured by the Curiosity rover on Aug. 14 has been drawing attention because it shows what look like a bone.

The odd structure, which can be easily spotted on the image amidst other debris, resembles a thigh bone causing UFO enthusiasts to speculate that complex life forms may have possibly existed on the Red Planet at one point in its history. The website UFO Blogger, which has been keeping an eye on similar findings by the Curiosity Rover, even described the object as “fossilized thigh bone on Mars.”

Discoveries made by the Curiosity Rover suggest that the Red Planet may have supported microbial life billions of years ago. One of the Curiosity’s missions is to find out if the Gale Crater may have been able to support simple life forms. Analysis of samples from two mudstone slabs that the rover discovered showed that the area once held mild water, the crucial ingredient for supporting life, prompting scientists to believe that the planet may have once supported life.

NASA scientists have not yet spoken about the mysterious object that was seen in the rover’s newly captured image, but the photo and news of the bone-like object on Mars are going viral. The news about the possible remains of a Martian being that was captured by NASA’s very own scientific instruments also came at a time when images of what some claim to be that of a UFO hovering over Houston are spreading on social media.

Pictures and a video of a circular object hovering in the Houston sky and giving a light show had people buzzing of a possible alien craft albeit some UFO experts themselves are not sold out to the idea that the sighted object was indeed a spacecraft from another planet.

Chinese brothers run farm home to 50,000 SNAKES where staff have to do three months of training before they start work

It is home to 50,000 snakes, including 30,000 cobras

For most of us, it is the daily commute or a meeting with the boss that is the most stressful part of the working day.

But spare a thought for brothers Yang Xunyi and Yang Xunlun who have to manage a farm of 50,000 snakes on a daily basis.

The pair run a 3.3 acre snake farm, which includes 30,000 cobras in Chongqing, a major city in south-west China.

The farm, in Chongqing, a major city in south-west China, is home to 50,000 snakes. It has 20 workers, all of whom have to go through an intensive three-month training programme before they can start work on the site.

A worker at the snake farm in Chongqing, in China, holds up one of the 50,000 snakes on the farm.

Mr Xunyi, 40, and his younger brother Mr Xunlun have been in charge of the farm for six years.

And it is certainly not for the faint-hearted – Mr Xunyi said he had been bitten multiple times.

‘I have been bitten numerous times, which all happened when I fed them.

‘When you are bitten, you have to squeeze out the poison immediately and wash the wound with a large amount of water.’

He said he treated the wound with his home-made balm and medicines instead of visiting hospital.

The farm has 20 workers, all of whom have to go through an intensive three-month training programme before they are allowed to work on the site.

Their job involves incubating eggs, catching food for the snakes and killing the animals. The skin of the snakes is then sold and every year, around 500,000 skins are exported from Asia.

Chairless Chair – Amazing Invisible Chair

Chairless Chair – Amazing Invisible Chair

The Chairless Chair, an invisible chair that you can wear

It’s like a chair that isn’t there, but magically appears whenever you need it. It’s called the Chairless Chair and you wear it on your legs like an exoskeleton: when it’s not activated, you can walk normally or even run. And then, at the touch of a button, it locks into place and you can sit down on it. Like a chair that is now there.

“The idea came from wanting to sit anywhere and everywhere, and from working in a UK packaging factory when I was 17″, says Keith Gunura, the 29-year old CEO and co-founder of noonee, the Zurich-based startup behind the device, “standing for hours on end causes a lot of distress to lower limbs, but most workers get very few breaks and chairs are rarely provided, because they take up too much space. So I thought that the best idea was to strap an unobtrusive chair directly to myself”.

The device never touches the ground, which makes it easier to wear: a belt secures it to the hips and it has straps that wrap around the thighs. A variable damper engages and supports the bodyweight, which is directed towards the heels of the shoes. These are specially designed and part of the mechanism, but an alternate version works with any footwear and touches the ground only when in a stationary position. The user just moves into the desired pose and then powers the device, which currently runs for about 24 hours on a single 6V battery.

“In addition to resting your leg muscles, it also provides optimal posture”, adds noonee CTO and co-founder Bryan Anastisiades “it keeps your back straight and can reduce the occurrence of bad postures for both healthy workers and those recovering from muscle related injuries”.

Sammy Margo, a chartered physiotherapist, told CNN: “As physiotherapists we actively encourage people to move throughout the day. This device looks like a great compromise in that it allows the wearer to move as well as sit intermittently. I wouldn’t encourage its use for long term sitting, however it is suitable for people who need to vary their tasks”.

The Chairless Chair is attracting interest and production line trials are set to start in Germany with BMW in September and with Audi later this year.

While sitting down all day is so detrimental to health that it will shorten life expectancy, standing up in order to work is also a source of problems. Physical strain, repetitive movements and poor posture can lead to conditions called Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which are now one of the leading causes of lost workday injury and illness. In 2011, MSDs accounted for 33 percent of all worker injuries and illnesses in the U.S. with over 378,000 cases, according to data from the United States Department of Labor. In Europe, over 40 million workers are affected by MSDs attributable to their job, according to a study entitled Fit For Work Europe and conducted across 23 European countries.

The Chairless Chair represents an innovative approach to this problem, which is currently addressed mostly through ergonomics of the workplace. Although unique, it shares some similarities with the Swiss Milking Stool, a monopod used by farmers to milk cows, which dates back to the early 19th Century. It had straps that secured it to the wearer and required some practice to be used due to the single source of support. It was phased out by the rise of the milking parlor.

An aluminium and carbon fibre frame keeps the overall weight of the Chairless Chair at just two kilograms, so it doesn’t burden the wearer with too much excess weight and only marginally impairs movement. And in the future, it could be fitted with smart motors able to infer the user’s intentions and offer the ideal posture without even the need to press a button.

This could open up additional daily life applications, says Gunura: “Imagine if you had one of these while you were riding on a crowded train: it would make for a much more comfortable commute. But we’re also thinking about people behind the counter in retail, farmers picking fruit and even surgeons in the operating room. A chair would be impractical, but the Chairless Chair would fit in nicely”.
