The Relationship between Theory and Hypothesis

In a classroom, a student presented his research paper. Once QA session started after the completion of the presentation, one of the students raised an objection on the study. The student objected the presenter that the hypotheses he presented are not valid as these are not derived from any theory. The hypotheses should have been linked with some theoretical framework to provide an explanation of event or phenomenon. The teacher intervened by saying that both of you are right and the difference is that both of you are thinking in different contexts. The students got surprised by the comment of teacher that how is it possible that two persons are right at the same time?

You as a student of research methodology build your arguments to justify your point of view with logic and to support the person who according to you is right (presenter, student, or teacher).

A hypothesis is a statement that can be tested (not yet proved) while a theory is an overall principle or body of principles that has been established to explain a wide variety of phenomena.

Hypothesis should be related to a body of theory. Hypothesis has to be supported by theoretical argumentation. For this purpose the research may develop his/her theoretical framework which could help in the generation of relevant hypothesis. For the development of a framework the researcher shall depend on the existing body of knowledge. In such an effort a connection between the study in hand and the existing body of knowledge can be established.

That is how the study could benefit from the existing knowledge and later on through testing the hypothesis could contribute to the reservoir of knowledge.

Assignment Statement:
You are required to make a presentation consisting of 5 slides. Detail about each slide is given below with the screenshots as samples. Detailed Description of Assignment Requirements:

First slide should contain your name on the top, then Student ID, your VU Email ID, and finally your picture.
If you have any issue regarding uploading your own picture, then you can use any picture.

In this slide you will mention all the courses you have taken so far.
You have to provide information regarding courses taken up to maximum of two semesters.
If you are in the first semester then you will create only one table, otherwise two.
If you have taken more than two semesters than you will only provide information regarding first 2 semesters.
Information provided should be in same format as shown in below slide.
If provided information will not be in tabular format, then marks will be deducted.

In this slide you will insert a spreadsheet.
The spreadsheet will have the information about the obtained marks in all the assignments and quizzes for each course in this semester.
We have provided dummy values in the example screenshot. You will only write your own obtained marks for each assignment and quiz in the provided format.
If you had any non-graded assignment(s) in this semester, then you can choose any number from 1 to 20 as the obtained marks for that assignment.
If the result of an assignment is not declared yet, then you can choose any number from the range of numbers specified above (e.g. 1 – 20).
