New iPhone 7 Details Reveal 3 Radical Design Changes
Every other year Apple AAPL -1.90% changes the iPhone’s design, and following new leaks it appears 2016 could well produce the company’s most radical new iPhone to date…
Korea’s Commercial Times reports a trio of exciting changes are already being finalised for the iPhone 7 and all three look set to shake up the competition through a combination of innovation and – intriguingly – reviving a feature rivals discarded:
1. The iPhone 7 Will Be Waterproof
There has been speculation about this for some time and now it seems the smoke will indeed lead to fire: Apple is working hard to make the iPhone 7 completely waterproof.
In fairness the signs have been here for some time as an unmentioned ‘feature’ of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus was the discovery they are virtually waterproof already. While I don’t recommend trying this for fear of voiding your warranty, tests have seen the handsets survive hours being fully submerged in water so taking one further step with the iPhone 7 makes a lot of sense. Just imagine the opportunity for underwater photography in Apple’s marketing.
So how would Apple take this final step? An obvious route would be to go through with growing reports that it will abandon the headphone jack – by far the deepest port in the iPhone and the hardest to waterproof. Whatever Apple’s route, however, the irony that rivals like Samsung had waterproof devices years ago then ditched the feature to more closely mimic Apple’s design aesthetic will not be lost on many.
